Safety in going by train
BOB and BEG close a gap in traffic and safety education in schools
Vandalism and accidents in rail traffic are increasing. Dangerous situations at crowded stations and intensively used tracks have become more frequent. Again and again prohibited crossing of tracks, playing and bickering are causing accidents, often with lethal consequences. Besides that damages and vandalism to rail cars caused by scholars have become routine.
In order to take preventive action the Bayerische Oberlandbahn and the Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH (BEG) in cooperation with the Bavarian Academy for the Continuing Education of Teachers have developed a training brochure. The project was sponsored by the Bayerische Gemeindeunfallversicherungsverband (GUVV).
The workbook closes a gap in traffic and safety education in schools. Since many years workbooks are around for individual and bus traffic, only rail traffic had not been considered yet. Worksheets address scholars in a range of 12 to 14 years and are distributed free of charge to Bavarian schools. A special chapter is intended for schools focussing on the support of the mentally disabled.
The objective of the project is to sensitise for the dangers in railroad traffic and to provide preventive education. Among interesting background information on railroad operations also tips are given for the next school excursion. The module on safety comprises: appropriate behaviour on platforms and at railroad crossings, dangerous plays, dangers caused by electricity and ends with chapters on graffiti and vandalism. The workbook is completed by facts on the historic development of rail services, on environmental issues, on mobility and on stations, timetables and tickets.
Further actions are under preparation. An online quiz under www.sicher-bahn-fahren.de allows scholars to verify their knowledge. The brochure can be downloaded here.
